Inside the Met's gilded Gala

Invitations have been sent, the custom gowns and outfits are selected and the stars are ready to dazzle on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art at this year's Met Gala . This year's exhibit is a continuation of last year's theme of American fashion and will include "cinematic vignettes" created by top Hollywood directors congruent with the "In America: An Anthology of Fashion" theme. The 2022 Met Gala is likely to be a larger event than last year's as high-profile celebrities circle to show off their best Gilded Age looks. Vogue, owned by one of the Met Gala sponsors, CondΓ© Nast, will livestream the event on its website, starting at 6 p.m.

Does Putin have an endgame in Ukraine?

President Vladimir Putin hopes to grab wins in eastern Ukraine and parts of the Black Sea coastline to justify the huge cost of his invasion . If successful, he could claim he met an initial objective of securing the Donbas area contested by Ukrainians and Russian-backed separatists since 2014. Calling the next few weeks pivotal, a senior Defense Department official said Russia will "have some real decisions to make" if its new offensive doesn't succeed. What happens in the next month, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, could determine security conditions in Europe for a generation.

With questions about sex workers, feds investigate former Peace Corps worker

John Peterson was drinking at a bar and hired a sex worker before a fatal hit-and-run in Tanzania in 2019 . The Peace Corps evacuated Peterson within hours, kept him on payroll and allowed him to resign after 18 months. He was never criminally charged. The Peace Corps Office of Inspector General is again looking into the case, widening its scope. The reason for the renewed interest is unclear, but it comes after USA TODAY in December exposed details of the chaotic episode.

Original investigation: A Peace Corps worker killed a woman in Africa. The US helped him escape prosecution.

Warrant issued for officer wanted in inmate's escape

Authorities issued an arrest warrant for a corrections officer who disappeared with an inmate from a northern Alabama jail last week. Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton said police know Vicky White "participated" in the escape of inmate Casey Cole White on Friday from the Lauderdale County Detention Center in Florence, though it's unclear whether she did so willingly or was coerced. Singleton said Casey White was handcuffed and shackled when he and the officer left the jail.

California is (100% renewable) electric!

While partygoers celebrated in the blazing sunshine at the Stagecoach music festival, renewable electricity met 100% of California's demand for the first time on Saturday. Most of it came from large amounts of solar power produced along Interstate 10, an hour east of the Coachella Valley. Energy demand statewide hit 18,672 megawatts, and 37,172 megawatts were available to meet it. The milestone lasted almost 15 minutes before edging down to about 97% renewables.
