It's the last Thursday in April, Talking Tech readers. Brett Molina back at it with another round of tech headlines. |
Not sure if you heard, but Tesla and SpaceX CEO (not to mention the richest person on Earth) Elon Musk is poised to buy Twitter. |
The deal is valued at $44 billion, and, once it's completed later this year, Twitter will become a privately-held company. |
Lots of ground to cover. So let's dig in to the big questions. |
Why is he doing this? Musk is not a fan of how Twitter moderates content and users, viewing its potential as a "platform for free speech around the globe." There are some concerns about whether his vision of free speech could mean a rise in hate speech on the platform. |
How will Twitter change? For starters, it's likely Musk might pull back on moderation. He's also hinted at features like better authentication for users as a way to get rid of bots. |
Why take the company private? It becomes easier for Musk to make changes without worrying about pleasing shareholders. |
Would users pay for Twitter? Recent tweets by Musk suggest he doesn't like ads, preferring a subscription model. The question is whether users want to pay. |
Does this mean Trump comes back to Twitter? Observers believe Musk would lift Trump's suspension from the platform. But Trump recently said he's not coming back. |
Would Musk move Twitter to Texas? He moved Tesla there, and he's placed stakes from other companies in the state. Experts say it makes sense to bring Twitter to Texas, too. |
