Happy Wednesday! Here's what we have for today: |
Marjorie Taylor Greene and others throw 'pedophile' around with ease. That has to stop. |
By Rex Huppke |
In our toxic and brain-optional political climate, certain pundits, politicos and random Twitter dingbats have decided to spend the early days of National Child Abuse Prevention Month shooting the label "pedophile" around like a spitball. |
It's outrageous, several steps beyond offensive and utterly indefensible. Though we live in an age when many of the lines you don't cross have been run over and worn away, this particular trend crosses a line the vast majority of us can still see clearly. And it has to stop. |
Senators who plan to vote in favor of U.S. Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson are being labeled "pro-pedophile," a malicious assertion grounded in nonsense. People who speak out against the Florida Parental Rights in Education law — called the "don't say gay" law by opponents — are swiftly declared, by some, to be pedophiles. |

I wasn't sure what to expect when my dad and I left for Poland and Ukraine. All I knew was that I felt pretty awkward piling dozens of boxes of feminine hygiene products into my cart at Costco. My dad and I were also responsible for packing up more than 4,000 diapers, which is a pretty sad thing to be bringing into a war zone. It says a lot about who the real victims of war are. |
I saw many people my own age among the refugees. Teenage boys in high school, just like me, carrying all the possessions they could cram into a single suitcase, helping their moms, grandmas and younger siblings. One boy crossing the border waved at me and I considered how much we had in common as recently as two months ago, and how little we have in common now. If the boy had been just three years older than I am, he would have stayed behind in Ukraine to fight for his country's freedom. |

The seat that Justice Clarence Thomas occupies on the Supreme Court bench has been especially hot in recent weeks amid calls for his recusal from certain cases. The roaring fire has been fueled by revelations that his wife, Ginni Thomas, a well-connected conservative activist, involved herself in efforts to undermine American democracy. |
After magazine articles in January and February questioned how her work might impair his, Ginni Thomas gave an interview in March offering reassurances that she and her husband have separate careers and separate opinions. "Clarence doesn't discuss his work with me, and I don't involve him in my work," she said. |
That has been the correct and prevailing way to think about Washington power couples; however, the Thomases have given us good reason to question whether that deferential status quo should apply in these circumstances. |
