Talking Tech

Thursday, March 3

It's Friday eve, Talking Tech readers, not to mention March, which means we're closer to spring. Brett Molina here to deliver the latest headlines while awaiting some warmer weather.

As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine intensifies, security experts are warning Americans to remain vigilant online.

Does this mean you should panic because a cyberattacker will directly target you? Experts say no, but any broader attacks on the services we use could impact your online activities.

This is why it's important to stop and perform a quick tech check-up to make sure you are safe. A couple of tips to get started:

Use multifactor authentication. Nothing beats a good ol' tech two-step. When activated, you sign in, receive a prompt for a special code, then check your text messages or an authenticator app to grab the code and type it in. Easy peasy.
Update your software. Don't tap the button to remind you later, or tomorrow. Update now.
Use strong, unique passwords. Don't feel bad if you used "123456" or "password." (heck, even Kanye showed the world from the Oval Office he relied on '000000' to unlock his iPhone.)  But we know you can do better. If you hate trying to remember every password for every account, consider a password manager.

Also, the conflict has sparked a wave of scams based on pleas to donate to Ukraine, or other ways you can help. Get a random email or text about this? Think before clicking.
