In July 2019, my life took a dramatic and unexpected turn when I listened to a phone call during which the president of the United States made inappropriate and possibly unlawful demands of a foreign leader. I did my duty by reporting my concerns within the National Security Council, where I served as a director. When later subpoenaed by Congress, I testified truthfully about what I heard. As a result, my career and personal life were forever turned upside down. |
I never sought public attention. In fact, I spent my career as an officer in the U.S. Army out of the public eye. When I heard something I thought was wrong, I reported it through private, official channels. My knowledge of what I heard on that phone call became public only when President Donald Trump's conduct became the subject of an impeachment inquiry and Congress sought my testimony. |

[Whoopi] Goldberg's comments earned her a tsunami of social-media vituperation and a two-week suspension from ABC News, whose president urged her to "reflect and learn." But I hope the rest of us can use this moment to reflect and learn about our own racial categories, too. They are historical and cultural inventions, every bit as much as the idea of a Jewish "race" was. |
Tragically, race tricks us into thinking that our differences are biological: in other words, that they lie in our bodies. And that's the biggest lie of all. |
But it's all around us, and we won't let go of it. After I have reviewed the idea of Jews as a race, I tell my class that I hope that one day everyone in America will be seen as part of the same race – that is, the human race – rather than members of different ones. |
That sparks another round of angst, this time with a defensive tinge. Students tell me that I'm trying to "erase" their differences – or, even, that I'm engaging in "color-blind racism" myself. |

I don't think anyone has been more embroiled in the back and forth on masking than I have. Back in February of 2020, I famously (or infamously) tweeted to America to "STOP BUYING MASKS! They are NOT effective in preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus, but if healthcare providers can't get them to care for sick patients, it puts them and our communities at risk!" |
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and many others said the same thing. It's certainly an admonishment many of us would love a redo on, but it doesn't mean it was intentionally misleading, or represented an unreasonable recommendation based on information available at the time. |
