Talking Tech

Thursday, December 2

It's Thursday, so you know what that means: another Talking Tech newsletter. It's Brett Molina back with more top headlines in tech.

Let's start with the absolute last person you want sliding in to your DMs: a debt collector.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said this week it will allow debt collectors to contact you through social media. However, they can only message you privately, as opposed to tagging you in a public post, claiming you own money. The collectors must also clearly identify themselves when they attempt to message you or friend you on a social network, and give you the choice to opt out of DMs.

Going out on a limb here, but I'm going to assume most friend requests from debt collectors are going to go unanswered.   I guess they could try Tinder?

What else happened in Tech?

► Tesla made an ATV for kids. It's not just Mom and Dad who get to brag about their new Tesla. The automaker has created the Cyberquad, a $1,900, all-electric, four-wheel ATV for kids 8 and up. It's modeled after the Cybertruck, so of course, it looks just as weird.

► Spotify Wrapped has arrived. If you have a Spotify subscription, you can discover the artists and songs you streamed most in 2021. Pro tip: don't share a Spotify account with your kids, unless you want tunes from the "Trolls" soundtrack mixed in with your Nirvana.

► Big changes at Twitter. Jack Dorsey stepped down as CEO. Former chief technology officer Parag Agrawal is taking over.

► Texas social media law blocked. A federal judge has blocked a law that would have allowed Texas residents to sue social media companies for banning them from their platforms.

Thursday's tech tip

Want to trade in your smartphone for a better model, or just to give to a family member or friend? Be sure you follow these steps first to protect your privacy and security.

This week on Talking Tech

On the Talking Tech podcast, we discuss Google Play's top apps of the year, what to do if you lose your smartphone and Dorsey's departure from Twitter.

Thanks for reading. If you'll excuse me I've got my eye on a 37-cent Whopper.
