Senate gathers for historic Trump impeachment trial
The second impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump begins, AOC to hold vaccine town hall and more news to start your Tuesday.

Good morning, Daily Briefing readers. Donald Trump is making history, in a bad way. It's Jane, with Tuesday's news.

All eyes will be on Capitol Hill as former President Donald Trump's historic second impeachment trial gets underway. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will hold a virtual town hall on the COVID-19 vaccine. Get those engines fired up: the 2021 NASCAR season kicks off at Daytona Beach. And, it's National Pizza Day. How will you be celebrating? 🍕

Here's today's news:

Historic second impeachment trial of former President Trump begins

The consequences of the Senate impeachment trial that opens Tuesday could be considerable for former President Donald J. Trump. Accustomed to earning the word "unprecedented" while he was in office, Trump will do it again out of office : the first president to be impeached twice, and the first to face that historic rebuke even after moving out of the White House. But the stakes could be even higher for others, especially for the Republican Party. In the wake of the Jan. 6 assault on the Capitol – the insurrection that triggered these impeachment proceedings – a GOP civil war has been ignited over the party's direction and its tolerance for fringe conspiracy theorists. For Democrats, the trial will be an early test of the new majority leader, Chuck Schumer of New York, and members of his caucus.

Can Trump legally live at Mar-a-Lago? Florida town wants to know

His impeachment trial aside, former President Donald Trump faces a hurdle much closer to home Tuesday: The town council of Palm Beach, Florida, on Tuesday will discuss whether Trump is legally allowed to live at his private club, Mar-a-Lago . Those who want the town to block Trump from living at Mar-a-Lago have cited a 1993 agreement that let him convert the property from a private residence to a club. But in a memo first reported by the Washington Post, Palm Beach Town Attorney John C. Randolph says local zoning ordinances likely allow Trump to live there as a "bona fide employee."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to hold COVID-19 vaccine town hall

With President Joe Biden's effort to create 100 mass vaccination sites nationwide in 100 days underway, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will hold a town hall Tuesday on the COVID-19 vaccine and local distribution efforts in her New York district. Roughly half of the predominantly low-income community in Ocasio-Cortez's district is Hispanic. Health equity experts say racial disparities in access to COVID-19 vaccines has been an issue because people of color suffer disproportionate rates of COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths as a result of longstanding systemic inequities and racism. With deaths mounting among the most vulnerable, the good news is that more people are getting shots, pushing states to expand eligibility as the U.S. government currently administers about 1.4 million vaccines a day. In the week ended Sunday, the U.S. reported 819,050 cases, about half the rate reported a month earlier. The country has been averaging about 3,000 reported deaths per day for a month, and in the week ended Sunday, the U.S. reported 22,121 deaths.
