Daily Briefing

Monday, February 10
In the press room, Bong Joon-ho had his hands full with his awards for best picture and best director.
Monday's Daily Briefing: That was a historic (bleeping) Oscars
'Parasite' wins four Academy Awards, President Trump will deliver his latest budget proposal to Congress, and more news to start your Monday.

Good morning! Last night, the Oscars stuck mainly to the script, until they decided to make a little history. "Parasite" became the first South Korean film to win best international film and best picture. In the words of director Bong Joon-ho: "It's really (bleeping) crazy!"

I'm N'dea Yancey-Bragg with the the news to look out for today.

1. Oscars: 'Parasite' wins four Academy Awards, including best picture

Brad Pitt, Bong Joon-ho, Laura Dern, Joaquin Phoenix and Renée Zellweger will likely be admiring their shiny new Oscars on Monday, after taking home big prizes at the 92nd Academy Awards. Joon-ho's acclaimed South Korean comedy "Parasite"  won four Oscars, including becoming the first non-English film to win best picture. The movie also won best international film, best original screenplay and best director. Winners in the acting categories were less surprising: Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for "Joker;" Renee Zellweger took best actress for the Judy Garland biopic "Judy"; Laura Dern was named best supporting actress for "Marriage Story"; and Brad Pitt snagged his first acting Oscar for his supporting role in Quentin Tarantino's "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood."

Why 'Parasite' was an Oscar no-brainer as the first foreign-language best picture

2. Trump's latest budget proposal to be delivered to Congress

President Donald Trump will deliver his latest budget proposal to Congress on Monday, a $4.89 trillion package that calls for increases to military spending and cuts to domestic programs . The spending plan – the final one of Trump's first term in office – proposes military spending of $740.5 billion, a 0.3% increase, for a fiscal year that begins in October. Non-defense programs would be cut by 5%, to $590 billion. The proposal also calls for $4.6 trillion in deficit reduction, $4.4 trillion in spending reductions and a 21% cut to foreign aid, officials said Sunday. Trump's budget has no chance of winning approval in Congress – Democrats control the U.S. House – but it does reflect his priorities as he pursues re-election in November.

3. Harvey Weinstein's sex crimes trial resumes

As Hollywood recovers from a long night at the Oscars, former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein is scheduled to appear in court on Monday for the start of another week of his sex crimes trial. The former famed producer's team of defense lawyers is expected to continue to present their case this week, resuming with witnesses they feel can help secure a not guilty verdict. Weinstein, 67, is charged with five sex crimes, including rape and assault. He pleaded not guilty and denied all allegations of nonconsensual sex.

4. Black News Channel set to launch: 24-hour national outlet targets black viewers

Live from Tallahassee, Florida, it's the Black News Channel. After more than a decade of planning, the launch of the 24-hour national cable news channel targeting black viewers is set for Monday. Black News Channel is the brainchild of former Republican U.S. Rep. J.C. Watts, who serves as chairman, and veteran television manager Bob Brillante as chief executive officer. Watts said the network first and foremost will be a news operation, but will offer programming targeting women, culture, history, weather and other staples.

5. Westminster dog show: It's the canine Super Bowl

The 144th annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show continues Monday, with more than 200 primped and pampered breeds competing in New York City for some of the top prizes in all of dogdom. The show debuted in 1877 and is the second-oldest continuously held sporting event in the U.S., trailing the Kentucky Derby, which began in 1875. Monday's competition features best-of-breed and group judging, ahead of Tuesday's Best in Show top prize. Last year's winner was a wire fox terrier named King; terriers have claimed the top spot 47 times, the most of any breed.
