Super Bowl LIV: San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs |
Super Bowl Sunday has arrived, with the San Francisco 49ers taking on the Kansas City Chiefs in the final game of the NFL's 100th season. The Chiefs will rely on star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, but he faces a big challenge: The 49ers' No. 1 pass defense. San Francisco finished the regular season 13-3 but is a slight underdog, with Kansas City a 1.5-point favorite. But the Super Bowl is more than just the game. Iowa Poll canceled after Buttigieg's name was omitted in survey call |
The highly anticipated release of the Iowa Poll, one of the most respected political surveys in the nation , was canceled Saturday night after Pete Buttigieg's campaign complained that his name had been omitted by a poll interviewer. The Iowa Poll's sponsors, The Des Moines Register and CNN, jointly made the decision in consultation with Selzer & Co., which conducts the poll, after determining they couldn't verify that the results were valid. CNN conducted an internal investigation and found that an operator had enlarged the font on their computer screen, cutting off Buttigieg's name, which had been at the bottom. Democratic presidential candidates were eagerly awaiting the poll results leading into Monday's caucuses. |

Punxsutawney Phil predicts early spring |
The results are in: Punxsutawney Phil could not find his shadow . And as the legend goes, this means we're in for an early spring. This is only the 20th time out of 124 in his recorded history — there are 10 years where no record remains — that Phil hasn't been able to find his shadow. The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club traces the tradition's roots back to Candlemas Day in Europe – the Christian "festival of lights" that falls on Feb. 2, which marks the midway point between the start and end of winter. If Punxsutawney Phil had seen his shadow, according to legend, that means there would be at least six more weeks of winter weather. |
| Groundhog handler AJ Dereume holds Punxsutawney Phil, who did not see his shadow, predicting an early or late spring during the 134th annual Groundhog Day festivities on Feb. 2, 2020 in Punxsutawney, Pa. Groundhog Day is a popular tradition in the United States and Canada. A crowd of upwards of 20,000 people spent a night of revelry awaiting the sunrise and the groundhog's exit from his winter den. If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his den. Early spring arrives if he does not see his shadow, causing Phil to remain above ground. | Jeff Swensen, Getty Images | |
Federal report on Kobe Bryant crash, funeral plans could come this week |
Sunday marks one week since the death of basketball icon Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven other people involved in a helicopter crash in California . Expected soon is a federal safety agency's preliminary report that will include "facts only" and won't make a determination into the cause of the crash, said NTSB investigator Jennifer Homendy. Still, the agency could issue safety recommendations prior to the final report. Bryant's family and city officials in Los Angeles are still working out details for the funeral and memorial services. A public memorial could be held at the Staples Center, the Lakers basketball home, or at a football stadium to accommodate what could be a massive crowd of mourners. |
