Tuesday's Daily Briefing: Battle of the billionaires in South Carolina
Billionaire Tom Steyer joins Democratic candidates for South Carolina debate, President Trump pays tribute to Gandhi in India and more news you need to know Tuesday.

Good morning, Daily Briefing readers. Before we get into today's news, Monday was kind of a busy day so ICYMI: Harvey Weinstein was found guilty of third-degree rape, venerated NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson died at 101, and Vanessa Bryant filed a wrongful death lawsuit as fans and stars mourned Kobe and Gianna Bryant.

It's N'dea and people are talking about how tonight's Democratic debate stage will feature not one but two billionaires: Tom Steyer and former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The last time the Democrats debated, Bloomberg did not exactly get a warm welcome.

Politics Editor Annah Aschbrenner talks about Bloomberg's strategy in his second debate tonight over on our morning podcast. P.S. Annah also has a hand in our On Politics newsletter. Sign up to get that here. (P.P.S.  Here was Annah's last newsletter.)

Democratic debate in South Carolina will include billionaire Tom Steyer

After failing to qualify for last week's Democratic debate in Las Vegas, billionaire Tom Steyer will be back on the stage Tuesday when the candidates face off in Charleston, South Carolina, ahead of the Feb. 29 primary. Steyer qualified for the debate after a CBS News poll released Sunday found him with 18% support among Democratic voters in the state. He made the cut because it was the second poll to find him with at least 12% support. Former Vice President Joe Biden leads the polls in the Palmetto State – which is critical for his campaign after losses in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada – but his advantage has shrunk dramatically in recent weeks. Biden blames his slide on Steyer, who has poured millions into the state race.

Chicago could see biggest snow of the season as winter storm targets Midwest, Northeast

A winter storm will bring snow to portions of the Plains, Midwest and Northeast this week, likely disrupting travel and closing schools. A swath of heavy snowfall is likely across the Midwest into the lower to central Great Lakes on Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service said. Snowfall accumulations in these areas may range from 6 to 12 inches; some locally higher totals are possible. Several inches of snow is forecast to coat Chicago and Milwaukee, where significant travel impacts are possible starting Tuesday, the Weather Channel said. Chicago has the potential to receive its biggest single snowstorm of the season, AccuWeather warned, and at least six inches are possible, likely more.

President Trump pays tribute to Gandhi on India trip

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump tossed colorful flower petals and planted a tree at a wreath-laying ceremony at the Raj Ghat memorial to famed independence leader Mahatma Gandhi  on Tuesday, the second day of their visit to India. After a raucous rally Monday in the world's largest cricket stadium, Trump is getting down to business with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a series of meetings amid escalating trade tensions and international criticism over India's crackdown in Kashmir. Trump will join Modi and other Indian officials for a dinner at the presidential palace before returning to Washington.

Amazon Go Grocery: New cashless grocery store model opens in Seattle

Amazon's radical new approach to buying foods and speeding up the checkout process goes the next mile Tuesday, with a full-size grocery store opening in Seattle. The Amazon Go Grocery opens with more than four times the space of the original, 7-Eleven-style, on-the-go type stores first opened in 2018. The e-tailer, which also owns Whole Foods, launched the Go stores as a way for local workers to get in and out, with a just basics menu that bypassed essentials like fruit and frozen foods. With Amazon Go Grocery, the company has re-imagined the concept as a store offering pretty much everything you'd see at a local market, except cashiers, with local fish and meats, wines and beers, fresh doughnuts, cookies and other staples.

Whitney Houston hologram tour set to begin in Europe

Whitney Houston is about to appear on the concert stage again. Eight years after her death, a holographic Houston will embark on a European tour  that starts in England on Tuesday. The "An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Tour" includes most of her biggest hits — "How Will I Know," "Saving All My Love For You" and "I Will Always Love You," along with some unexpected rarities, including a cover of Steve Winwood's "Higher Love." Houston was found dead in 2012 in a hotel bathtub in Beverly Hills, just hours before music stars began to gather at the hotel for the annual Clive Davis pre-Grammy party.

The first cheetah cubs ever conceived through in vitro fertilization have entered the world, marking a breakthrough for zoo breeding programs – a feat achieved at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio.

The zoo announced the birth early Monday. The two cubs, a male and a female, were born Feb. 19 to 3-year-old, first-time mother Isabelle, who keepers call "Izzy." They're healthy and bonding together in a den located in a behind-the-scenes area of the zoo. They are also super cute, according to reports.
