Giving Chicago's Youth a Fighting Chance

Christopher Norwood was nine-years old when he first came to Crushers Club, a boxing gym in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. It's a place where hard work and play hold equal weight—a place where Christopher and other young people growing up amidst poverty, drug use and systemic violence can let their guards down and hold one another up.

Turning Trash Into Cash

Experts estimate that an entire garbage truck worth of plastic hits our oceans every minute—the vast majority of it coming from developing nations like Haiti. Richardson Gustave knows he can't pull every piece of trash from his island's shores, but in his role at The Plastic Bank, a Canada-based organization that pays people to collect plastic waste for recycling and reuse, he's doing all he can.

This is the second story in our latest series, "The Brave," all about the incredible people protecting our Great Big Planet.
