'Horrific': 20 die in limousine crash in upstate New York |
Twenty people were dead and a picturesque, upstate New York community was in shock Sunday after a "horrific" crash of a limousine van near an intersection of rural, winding roads. The limousine failed to stop at the intersection in the town of Schoharie and slammed into a parked SUV, state police said. All eighteen people in the limousine, including the driver, and two pedestrians were killed in the Saturday crash, according to police. It was the biggest U.S. transportation accident since 2009, the National Transportation Safety Board said. "Twenty fatalities is just horrific," said Board Chairman Robert Sumwalt. |
Kavanaugh takes his seat on the nation's highest court |
Brett Kavanaugh is America's 114th Supreme Court justice. Confirmed by the Senate 50-48 and sworn in on Saturday, he'll hear cases right away. The battle over Kavanaugh was bitter and left the country with even deeper partisan divisions. The nation was kept in suspense during weeks of hearings, FBI investigations, undecided senators and sexual assault allegations. In the end, Kavanaugh's appointment to the high court will tilt power to conservatives for years to come. Protestors also made their voices heard this weekend with demonstrations outside the court and the Capitol. Some interrupted the Senate confirmation vote. Here's a look at what the confirmation could mean for the court, and for a divided country. |

Death toll rises after earthquake rocks Haiti |
A magnitude 5.9 earthquake rocked northwestern Haiti late Saturday, killing at least 12 people, injuring more than 180 and damaging dozens of homes and businesses. Heavy rains flooded streets in the region, hindering weekend rescue efforts. The quake is one of the strongest to hit the Caribbean island since a 2010 tremor killed more than 250,000 people. Haiti, one of the world's poorest nations, sits between the American and Caribbean tectonic plates, which move almost an inch a year. The movement can trigger seismic movement along active fault lines. |
Chaos erupts after McGregor's UFC fight |
A UFC main event erupted into a violent skirmish Saturday moments after Conor McGregor was mauled into submission by Khabib Nurmagomedov. The Russian battered McGregor over four rounds before McGregor tapped out, letting Nurmagomedov keep his UFC lightweight title. Nurmagomedov then leaped over the top of the cage and jumped onto McGregor's teammates. Chaos ensued, with security struggling to control the fracas. Another fight later broke out in the octagon itself. Nurmagomedov defended his violent actions and said Russian President Vladimir Putin was "proud" of him. |

Banksy artwork shreds itself after $1.4 million sale |
Artwork by the elusive street artist Banksy apparently self-destructed in front of startled auction-goers Friday, moments after being sold for $1.4 million. The spray-painted canvas "Girl With Balloon" went under the hammer at Sotheby's in London and fetched a record price for the artist. As an alarm sounded, it ran through a shredder embedded in the frame, emerging from the bottom in strips. Sotheby's — which noted before the sale that the ornate gilded frame was "integral" to the artwork — expressed surprise. Some art-market watchers suggested the work could be worth even more in its shredded state. |
