Insights, analysis and must reads from CNN's Fareed Zakaria and the Global Public Square team, compiled by Global Briefing editor Jason Miks.

September 2, 2018
Weekday editions of Global Briefing will return from September 4.

On Today's Show

On GPS at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. ET on CNN:

First, Fareed offers his Take on the information revolution, and how "we all got caught up in the excitement of the age, along with the novelty of the products and their transformative power."

"But the result does not seem one that a libertarian would celebrate. We now have a tech economy dominated by just a few mammoth companies that effectively create a barrier to entry for newcomers."

Next: Fareed steps away from the fray of minute-to-minute news to talk about the big picture of America. Is America in decline? Or is it as vibrant as ever? Joining Fareed to discuss the issue are James and Deborah Fallows, authors of "Our Towns: A 100,000-Mile Journey into the Heart of America," and Steven Brill, author of "Tailspin: The People and Forces Behind America's Fifty-Year Fall–and Those Fighting to Reverse It."

Also on the show: As America's children have headed back to school, many in the country's public schools are "attending institutions that are underfunded and overwhelmed," Fareed says. Joining Fareed to discuss the challenges facing US schools – and the lessons America could learn from other countries – is the OECD's Andreas Schleicher, author of "World Class: Building a 21st Century School System."

Plus: Democracy seems under siege in many parts of the world, with short-termism – politicians pushing through policies that will get them re-elected, not ones that will solve current or future problems – frequently the norm. Fareed is joined by Dambisa Moyo, author of "Edge of Chaos: Why Democracy is Failing to Deliver Economic Growth," who discusses some possible solutions.

And: Fareed speaks with Carlo Rovelli, a physicist and author of "Seven Brief Lessons on Physics," to discuss his latest book, "The Order of Time."
