What Washington is Talking About:
President Trump said he'd like to have a government shutdown over border security before the midterms, Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) say Trump is not paying attention to the threat from Russia and are pushing for a stronger response, and progressives are in New Orleans for this year's Netroots Nation event, with speeches today by Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.).

What America is Talking About:
The Carr Fire in Northern California has grown to nearly 127,000 acres as of Thursday night.

Seriously, What is Going On?:
At yesterday's White House briefing, the Trump administration's top intelligence officials reiterated in no uncertain terms that Russia continues to target the US. Among their comments:
  • Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said, "Our democracy itself is in the cross-hairs."
  • Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats said Russia continues its "pervasive efforts to undermine our fundamental values."
  • FBI Director Chris Wray said Russia's efforts pose "a threat we need to take extremely seriously."
And then at his rally later that night, Trump said, "we're being hindered by the Russian hoax. It's a hoax, OK?"

Last month, Trump stood next to Vladimir Putin and suggested in front of the world that he believes Putin's denial over his own country's assessment that Russia attacked our election. Last night, in front of his supporters in Pennsylvania, he did it again.

Trump Tries to Recast Ivanka's Press Comments:
Trump also sought yesterday to downplay his daughter's comments that the press isn't the enemy of the people, tweeting that she meant the real news media isn't the enemy, but the ~fake news media~ is. You know, Ivanka, if your father is misconstruing what you meant, you could always tweet back at him...

"Worse Than Watergate":
That's how legendary journalist Carl Bernstein described what's going on when talking to our Wolf Blitzer yesterday. Bernstein called Trump a "demonstrable authoritarian in terms of his rhetoric, in terms of whipping up his base" and said:

"What we are watching in the Trump presidency is worse than Watergate. It's worse that Watergate, I say, because the system worked in Watergate. The heroes of Watergate were Republicans who demanded that the president be held accountable, who demanded that he be transparent, who demanded to know what did the president know and when did he know it, and who conducted bipartisan investigation that led, in fact, to understanding and finding out what Nixon had done, whereas the Republicans on Capitol Hill thus far have done almost everything they can to impede and undermine legitimate investigation."

Mueller Wants to Interview Emin:
Special counsel Robert Mueller wants to speak with pop star Emin and his father, Russian oligarch Aras Agalarov. The Agalarovs' attorney, Scott Balber, said conversations about an interview have been "ongoing" for nearly a year, and that Mueller's team wants to ask them about the Trump Tower meeting with a Russian lawyer and about a Trump Tower in Moscow that was never built.

Ivanka's Store is Gone:
The Ivanka Trump brand's only physical location -- it was in Trump Tower -- was taken down this week and turned into a Trump-branded store. Business Insider went and got some before and after pics.

A Different Kind of Hunter:
Wildlife photographer Thomas Mangelsen said he drew No. 8 in Wyoming's issuance list to shoot grizzlies there, and will do so with his camera instead of a gun if he gets the chance. Rules limit 10 hunters in the field, one at a time, for 10 days until 10 males or one female is killed. Mangelsen told the Washington Post if he gets to shoot, "That will be 10 days that another hunter will not be in the field. We might be able to save a couple of bears." On Instagram, Mangelsen posted the below photo and wrote that it was "Serendipity!" that he was selected from more than 7,000 applicants.

Eric Church's Music Just Isn't the Same for Tomi:
Country star and gun owner Eric Church's comments to Rolling Stone about the need for gun reform (he specifically mentioned closing gun show loopholes, tougher background checks, and banning bump stocks) appears to have rubbed Tomi Lahren the wrong way. Lahren posted a photo of Church's "Desperate Man" playing and wrote, "Just not the same since he went anti-gun." Church already anticipated the possibility of blowback for his comments, telling Rolling Stone, "I don't care. Right's right and wrong's wrong."
