Kellyanne Conway responds to questions from reporters

Trump claims press is the 'enemy of the people.' Others in the White House disagree.

Presidential adviser Kellyanne Conway said Sunday she doesn't view the press as the "enemy of the people," despite President Donald Trump slapping that label on journalists. "I don't believe journalists are the enemy of the people," Conway said on CBS' Face the Nation. "I think some journalists are the enemy of the relevant, the enemy of the news you can use." Her statement came just hours after the president lashed out at the press on Twitter, saying the media "cause war" and are "very dangerous and sick." On Thursday, the president's daughter, Ivanka Trump, was asked if she believes the press is the enemy of the people. She replied: "No, I do not." White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders has declined to walk back the president's comments.

President Trump defends Donald Jr. over Russia meeting

President Donald Trump defended his eldest son in a Sunday morning tweet, insisting that the infamous June 2016 meeting that Donald Trump Jr. took with a Russian attorney at Trump Tower to get "dirt" on Hillary Clinton was "totally legal." Trump's former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, has claimed that the president knew about, and approved of, that meeting, according to multiple news reports. Trump Jr. has told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he couldn't remember if he told his father about the meeting.

31 people shot overnight in Chicago, days after protests against gun violence

Dozens of people were shot in Chicago between midnight Saturday night and Sunday morning as violence continued to bring havoc to the streets of the nation's third-largest city. The Chicago Tribune , citing police records, said 25 of the 31 victims were shot during five multiple-injury attacks over less than three hours. The violence raced through the city less than three days after hundreds of demonstrators temporarily shut down the city's iconic Lake Shore Drive in protest of gun violence while calling for the resignation of Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

Judge says Trump team '100 percent' responsible for finding deported immigrant parents

A federal judge on Friday rejected a Trump administration request to make the ACLU primarily responsible for locating migrant parents who were deported after they were separated from their children, making clear that the government bears "100 percent" of the burden. U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw said the ACLU can help locate about 400 parents who were deported and have not yet been located by the government. But Sabraw said that ACLU lawyers, who are representing plaintiffs in the class-action lawsuit, are not the ones who separated the families in the first place.

Vintage plane carrying tourists crashes in Switzerland, no survivors

An old-time propeller plane crashed near-vertically at high speed into a Swiss mountain, killing all 20 people on board, police said Sunday. The Junkers Ju-52 plane, operated by the Swiss company Ju-Air, went down Saturday on the Piz Segnas mountain above the Alpine resort of Flims, striking the mountain's western flank about 8,330 feet above sea level. Eleven men and nine women between the ages of 42 and 84 were killed. The mountainous area in southeastern Switzerland is popular with hikers and skiers and includes a glacier.

Powerful earthquake rocks Indonesia's Lombok island near Bali

At least 39 people were killed when a magnitude 7.0 earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok and nearby Bali , triggering a tsunami warning and sending residents and tourists running into the streets. Najmul Akhyar, district chief of North Lombok, told reporters that a power blackout made it impossible to immediately assess the full extent of the damage. A disaster agency official announced the death toll – which could rise as search and rescue operations continue.

Police use 'flash bangs' at right-wing rally in Portland that drew counter-protesters

Police used "flash bang" devices to disperse hundreds of protesters and counter-protesters who gathered at a right-wing rally in downtown Portland Saturday. The right-wing Patriot Prayer rally was met by hundreds of counter-protesters, including many self-described anti-fascists. It started off peaceful but turned chaotic after police say a group started throwing rocks and bottles at officers. At least one person was injured and several were detained because of the ruckus.

First Lady Melania Trump compliments LeBron James after her husband's insult

A day after her husband took a shot at LeBron James over Twitter — First Lady Melania Trump offered a much warmer take on the Los Angeles Lakers superstar through a White House spokesperson on Saturday. "It looks like LeBron James is working to do good things on behalf of our next generation and just as she always has, the First Lady encourages everyone to have an open dialogue about issues facing children today," First Lady spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said in a statement released to media outlets.
