Sunday 7.1.18

Welcome to your brand-new 5 Things Sunday newsletter -- and the first full month of summer! July is National Ice Cream Month and Women's Motorcycle Month. Who comes up with this stuff? These people do. Here's what else you need to know to Start Your Week Smart.
Protesters gathered in US cities yesterday, their demands to keep immigrant families together echoing from coast to coast.  ...   A stabbing attack last night wounded nine people at a housing complex for refugees in Boise, Idaho.  ...  In Thailand, 12 boys have been trapped in a cave for eight days, but today rescuers closed in on the spot they believe the kids are sheltering. ... And two soccer stars  - Messi and Ronaldo - had their World Cup hopes dashed on the same day.

Tuesday
  • Nearly 1,800 Puerto Ricans, displaced by Hurricane Maria, may have to move out from hotels where they'd been staying.  The Federal Emergency Management Agency was supposed to end housing assistance for them when July began, but a federal judge ordered the agency to extend the program at least until this date.

Wednesday
  • Happy Fourth of July! Besides fireworks and a day off (for many of us), the holiday will be marked by that quintessential American skills test: Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Defending champ Joey Chestnut is gunning to earn his 11th Mustard Belt. If you prefer to go bunless, check out the Peachtree Road Race, the world's largest 10K race. Among the 60,000 runners pounding the Atlanta streets near CNN headquarters will be some of your 5 Things family members.

Friday
A thunderstorm makes its way Tuesday toward Wichita, Kansas. This was perhaps the most breathtaking shot among what our colleagues at CNN Photos deemed the 36 top images of the week

Hunter Harris, a Chick-fil-A employee in Austin, Texas, and Joe Manchin, a US senator from West Virginia. Both recently used the Heimlich maneuver to save people who were choking -- and proved heroes hardly ever need capes.

"What embodies the African-American lens better than a
film like 'Black Panther'?"

Rhea Combs, curator of film and photography at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, explaining why the Smithsonian Institution has added objects from the record-breaking film to its collection

Why would they do this?
When CNN discovered that Russian trolls had exploited the fatal police shooting of Philando Castile, his mother had just one question: Why? Get to the bottom of that mystery -- and dive into other captivating stories -- with these weekend reads.

Too hot to hang outdoors?
Here's what streaming this month on Netflix. It includes "GLOW," the show about women's wrestling, with a look at '80s excesses through a #MeToo lens.

Marvel's lighter side
A title like "Ant-Man and the Wasp" doesn't scream comedy. But that's what you'll get from this big-screen sequel. The PG-13 flick opens Friday.

Insult to injury
Jimmy Fallon has tried to walk the line on politics. But "The Tonight Show" host got slammed by a Trump tweet anyway. His response could be make-or-break.

King of the Pitch
The World Cup's Round of 16 continues today with a pair of exciting matches: Spain takes on host Russia, followed by Croatia battling Denmark.

Got strawberries and cream?
Wimbledon begins tomorrow, running through July 15. Keep your eye on Serena Williams, who's seeded 25th, even though she's ranked 183rd in the world, after taking time off to have a baby. Another key story line: How Rafael Nadal is challenging Roger Federer to be the G.O.A.T.

21 stages to go
The Tour de France starts Saturday. It runs through July 29 and features more than 13 miles of cobblestones (is your brain bouncing yet?) and the tour classic Alpe d'Huez climb (don't look down!).
