News and opinion compiled from outlets across the country by Policing the USA
| | | The top things you should know about policing this week | | Racism that's more racist than ... racism? | The guys in blue have a message for America: "Blue racism" is worse than, well, racism. At least that's what the Sergeants Benevolent Association — the country's fifth-largest police union — explained in a recently released video. The message: Individuality for cops is often ignored. Officers aren't seen as mothers, cousins, aunts (or even as different races), but are instead stereotyped and mistreated based on the uniform. The " Blue Racism" video includes news footage about cops who have been killed in the line of duty. It also misquotes Martin Luther King Jr., leaving out a reference to skin color, stating instead that people should not be be "judged by their color, but by the content of their character." The actual quote: "I have a dream that my four children ... will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character." | Again, Baltimore! | A third video has emerged involving Baltimore City police that has caused state prosecutors to drop or postpone several criminal cases processed through the department. The recent discovery of "questionable activity" follows two other similar incidents. | Since mid-July, body-camera footage has been released (one recorded in November and the other in January) showing what appear to be cops either planting evidence or finding evidence that wasn't previously there. | The police department turned the latest video over to the state's attorney's office Aug. 2. | BLM movie will star Common | The young adult novel "The Hate U Give" will soon be available for viewing at the box office. Rapper Common will star as a cop and the uncle of a girl whose best friend was shot by police in the movie adaptation of the book about the Black Lives Matter movement. | Other stars of the flick? Amandla Stenberg of "The Hunger Games," and Russell Hornsby, of the critically acclaimed "Fences." | Common has been nominated for an Emmy for his work in Ava Duverney's "13th." If he wins, he'll add a new award to an incredibly long list. He's won three Grammys (19 nominations); an Oscar for the song "Glory," which was part of the soundtrack for Duverney's movie "Selma"; a Golden Globe award; and an Image award, among others. | Trial starts for cop who shot into a car full of teens | The trial for a Chicago cop (the city's first to face federal criminal charges for an on-duty shooting in at least 15 years), started Tuesday. Dash cam footage showed the officer firing 16 times into a vehicle that was moving away from him. Marc Proano is charged with using unreasonable force. | Two people were injured in the shooting, which Proano's attorney argued was a split-second decision. The 11-year veteran claimed he was trying to help a teen who was hanging out of the car the night of the December 2013 incident. | Delquantis Bates was struck in the shoulder and testified during day two of the trial that Proano threatened him. The officer told the teen that he was "lucky that he didn't kill me," Bates said. | What's life like in one of Baltimore's most raided Zip codes? | Police are dealing drugs with members of the community, residents say. And cops, they complain, don't engage with folks who live in Baltimore City's 21215 Zip code in a way that's productive — that would, for instance, prevent murders from "outsiders." But cops say they are reaching out to 21215 the same way they would reach out to any other community. | What did we learn when we took a trip through one of the most SWAT raided neighborhoods in Baltimore City?
