The First Natural Disaster of Trump's Presidency: How POTUS is responding

Who Trusts the News Media: Dems and college grads are more likely to say the media gets its facts straight than Repubs and those without a degree

What the White House is Talking About:
President Trump has a press conference at 4:20 this afternoon with President Niinisto of Finland, but he's undoubtedly going to be asked non-Finland related questions.

What the White House Press Corps is Talking About:
Trump's lunch with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson today at the White House, which comes on the heels of what many are calling Tillerson's rebellion on "Fox News Sunday," when he said the five words everyone's been repeating ever since: "The President speaks for himself."

Trump on Harvey:
Eyes will be on Trump's response today as devastation and flooding continue to hammer Houston and other parts of Texas. Amid remarkable stories of citizens helping citizens -- and journalists helping citizens, special shout-out to CNN's own Ed Lavandera -- the President's messages about Texas need to be realistic, hopeful, decisive, and a delicate balance of authoritative and compassionate. Can he do it?

Our Daily Melania:
The first lady's office confirms to CNN that Melania Trump will join her husband tomorrow on his visit to Texas.
"They Do Not Grasp Their Essential Irrelevance":
This, um, scathing quote from Sarah Ellison's new Vanity Fair feature/takedown of Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump is just a sampling of her reporting, which covers the past few months of Javanka's beleaguered Washington life. It's a long read but very insightful -- take the time. I screen-shotted this paragraph because it's a solid descriptor of how people inside Washington are feeling about the couple.

Dress Like the First Lady:
Returning from Camp David yesterday, Melania sported a totally different look than her $1500 Missoni departure dress. For her all pink, country casual Sunday, I'm pretty sure she's wearing J Brand Shock Pink jeans, which are sold out, but were $229, and this J Crew pink gingham button-down, which was $69.50, but is also sold out. This one in purple is still available. It's a slightly boxier fit, but ten bucks cheaper.

'Game of Thrones' Withdrawal? It's Ok! You Can Visit!:

I will not likely suffer the effects of "Game of Thrones" withdrawal after last night's (kinda boring?) Season 7 finale. And since I feel like I'm probably not alone, I found this British Vogue story for all of us. If we want to visit the actual sites where GOT is filmed, we can! Like, did you know that the coastline for Dragonstone is actually in Spain? So is the castle at Highgarden. And Dubrovnik, Croatia, is King's Landing -- wha? Here's the Dark Hedges in Northern Ireland, which doubles as the Kingsroad.

Happy Anniversary, Taupe Suit:
Remember three years ago when the country was up in arms because the president ... wore a taupe suit? Today's the anniversary of that moment, August 28th, 2014, when President Obama wore this tan ensemble during a press conference to discuss the situation in Ukraine. It's called perspective.
*Also, re Obama, he was not in Texas this weekend serving food -- and there also aren't sharks swimming in flooded Houston freeways. Mind your Internet hoaxes, people.

The Red Cross:
I'm going to take this space to just pass along a message from the American Red Cross. I did this yesterday, and it made me feel like I wasn't just looking at horrific images of the flood from afar but actually doing a tiny bit to help.

What Washington is Talking About:
The administrator of FEMA, Brock Long, told CNN Sunday the agency will be in Texas "for years." "This is a storm that the United States has not seen yet," he said.

What America is Talking About:
Harvey has left about 13 million people under flood watch across Texas and Louisiana, and FEMA estimates 30,000 will be in shelters.

Poll of the Day:
Independents, Democrats and college graduates are more likely to trust the news media than Republicans and those who didn't attend or finish college, according to Gallup. The poll asked respondents whether "news organizations generally get facts straight in news reporting."
Texas Front Pages:
Today's Houston Chronicle front page reads "Swamped By Harvey" with a photo of people rescuing an elderly woman in their personal boat. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reads "Catastrophic" with two men kayaking on a flooded street.

Some Repubs Aren't Too Happy With Trump's Pardon:
Congressional Republicans, including the House Speaker and Arizona's senators, have spoken out against President Trump's pardon of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Here's what they said:
Speaker Ryan: He "does not agree with this decision," a spokesman said.
John McCain: Trump's pardon "undermines his claim for the respect of rule of law."
Jeff Flake: "I would have preferred that the President honor the judicial process and let it take its course."

Biden: "We Are Living Through a Battle for the Soul of This Nation":
That was the hed of his op-ed for the Atlantic in which he called on Americans "to declare what the president can't with any clarity, consistency, or conviction: There is no place for these hate groups in America."

The 2017 VMAs Were Lame, Political:
The VMAs are my fav awards show, but let's be real, last night was kind of lame. I thought Katy Perry's hosting was unfunny and most of the performances were forgettable. I guess that's what we get when pop music is as uninspiring as it is these days and a single song -- "Despacito" -- has been No. 1 all summer.

They did not, however, scale back the politics. MTV ended up getting transgender service members to the show (ICYMI on Friday Trump signed a directive banning transgender recruits, although it remains unclear whether current transgender service members can remain in the military).

Pink wore tags that read "Wake The F*** Up," "Stay Woke" and "Fump Truck" during her medley performance of hits before being awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award by Ellen Degeneres.

Among the non-pop stars who took the stage were Rev. Robert Wright Lee IV, a descendant of Confederate General Robert E. Lee who called for the removal of the Charlottesville statue of his ancestor, and Susan Bro, mother of Heather Heyer, who was killed in a Charlottesville attack. Bro announced the creation of a foundation in her daughter's name.

And KP made a lot of jokes, some of which were political, most of which were cringeworthy (Handmaid's Tale! The world is one fire! Fidget spinners!). I did, however, like that she poked fun at herself and her Witness album a little bit, joking that she had the tweet "When @HillaryClinton becomes president, I promise to put out a timeless record that everybody loves!" saved as a draft.

Whole Foods Gets Cheaper:
The new Amazon-owned Whole Foods (or AmazonWholeFoods, as our president might say) is slashing prices today. Our colleagues in New York found avocados have gone from $2.99 to $1.49. So finally, millennials can buy homes and eat their avocado toast too. "Whole Foods Market will offer lower prices starting Monday on a selection of best-selling grocery staples across its stores, with more to come," the company said in a statement.

Justice For Tiffany:
I just want us to appreciate this boxing photo Tiff posted on Insta this weekend. Caption: "🥊 #MayweatherMcGregor #fighttime."

Kim K Channels Jackie Kennedy on Interview Cover:
The coverline: "America's New First Lady Kim Kardashian West & Her Daughter North West," plugging a story by Janet Mock and photos by Steven Klein. Back in June, Kim had the winning bid for a watch of Jackie's at an auction for $379,500.
