Renegotiating NAFTA; Apple, Google, Microsoft hoard $464B; BBC pay gap

What's new... what's next

1. Renegotiating NAFTA -- in 15 easy steps

President Trump got one step closer this week to completing a new trade deal with Canada and Mexico. But he has 15 more to go. And Canada and Mexico also have to ratify the deal. All sides also need to do everything fast because Mexico has presidential elections in 12 months and the leading candidate is no fan of President Trump's trade policy. What's more: Congress gets 90 legislative days -- not calendar days -- to mull over the agreement. And even then, Congress can suggest amendments and tweaks.

2. Apple, Google & Microsoft have $464 billion

Those three tech titans are sitting on a mountain of cash -- and most of it is stashed far away from the taxman. Apple alone has a stunning quarter-trillion dollars in cash. That's enough to buy Netflix three times over. All told, non-financial U.S. companies have $1.84 trillion of cash. Roughly 70% of that is held overseas, where the money isn't subject to U.S. taxes. Wall Street is hoping Congress will offer a one-time tax holiday to encourage companies to repatriate the cash.

3. U.K. wants to move finish line for retirement

Brits: Do you like your job? If so, that's good. The British government has announced plans to raise the state pension age to 68. That's seven years earlier than expected. The hike will now start to go live in 2037, affecting the retirement plans of roughly 7 million people. The move means an extra year on the job for workers born between April 1970 and April 1978. But it's not a done deal yet. Legislators still have to approve the change before it becomes law.

4. Is it a 'time of power' for women in tech?

The former CEO of Xerox has a message for women: "Go into tech. They will hire you." Ursula Burns told CNN's Poppy Harlow on Tuesday that it's a "time of power" for women in the industry, who have the leverage right now to affect real change. She also discussed her belief that government needs to help lift up the poor. "[The rhetoric today] is, 'If you don't have, you don't deserve to have,'" she said.

6. What's next:

Global central banks on hold: Fireworks are not expected when the Bank of Japan releases its interest rate decision at 11 p.m. ET Wednesday night. The BOJ is not expected to cut rates further into negative territory, but it could adjust its economic forecasts. The European Central Bank is also likely to keep policy steady when its meeting wraps up at 7:45 a.m. ET on Thursday. ECB chief Mario Draghi's words will be closely scrutinized when he takes questions at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Microsoft, Visa, eBay on tap: Microsoft stock has sizzled ahead of its Thursday afternoon earnings report, soaring 7% so far in July. Look to see if the tech behemoth – and its fast-growing cloud business -- can live up to the hype. Earnings are also due out after the bell from Visa and eBay.
