What's on tap today: Europe and ethics and our best wishes to Steve Scalise
| | | with Jessica Estepa | OnPolitics Today: What'd I miss? | Happy Thursday, OP friends! Another day, another awkward handshake moment. | | What's on tap today: Europe and ethics and our best wishes to Steve Scalise. | Let's go. | Trump in Europe | Handshakes aside (and yes, we know he shook the Polish first lady's hand), President Trump had a warm welcome in Poland, where he opined about that whole alleged Russia meddling in the election thing ( "nobody really knows for sure" what happened), CNN ("they have been fake news for a long time"), and North Korea ( "It's a shame that they're behaving this way, but they are behaving in a very, very dangerous manner, and something must be done about it" ), among other things. | Expect those and other topics to come up tomorrow during the G-20 summit, when he has a series of foreign policy meetings with world leaders including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. | Ethics director bows out | Walter Shaub, the government ethics director who has publicly clashed with Trump since basically day one, handed in his resignation on Thursday, and, needless to say, people are floored. Sen. Elizabeth Warren called it "deeply unnerving" and Rep. Elijah Cummings has already asked for a hearing with the outgoing director to talk about ethics regulations. | For his part, Shaub emphasized the importance of the very office he is leaving in his resignation letter: "They are commited to protecting the principle that public service is public trust, requiring employees to place loyalty to the Constitution, the laws, and ethical principles above private gain." | This does mean that President Trump is going to pick the person who will oversee potential ethics conflicts in the government (and his administration). | Wishing you a speedy recovery | Rep. Steve Scalise, who was one of the people shot last month when a gunman opened fire on GOP lawmakers' baseball practice, is back in the intensive care unit at a Washington, D.C., hospital. His condition was downgraded Wednesday night to serious because of an infection. We hope the Louisiana Republican recovers soon. | Elsewhere in politics | | | MOST SHARED USA TODAY STORIES | | Continued after advertisement | | | | | | | | FOLLOW US Thank you for subscribing to On Politics. © 2017 USA TODAY, a division of Gannett Satellite Information Network, LLC. 7950 Jones Branch Drive, McLean, VA 22102 Unsubscribe from On Politics Why did I get this?
