The Short List

👋🏼 Hello! Phaedra Trethan here. I'm seeking good vibes for my Phillies, facing elimination tonight against the Dodgers in L.A. 🤞🏼

In Wednesday's news:

An arrest has been made in connection with the Palisades fire in California.
Former FBI director James Comey was in federal court today.
Deion Sanders makes a lot of money. But the former NFL player-turned-University of Colorado coach isn't the only college skipper with surprising salary and perks.

But first: Dolly Parton is a national treasure. ⭐️ We are so relieved to hear that her recent health troubles aren't serious.

Charges in California wildfires

Southern California's January wildfires left 31 people dead and destroyed thousands of homes, businesses and other structures.

Now authorities say they know how one of them, the Palisades fire, started: They've charged 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht, whom they say intentionally started the fire Jan. 1. Here's what federal authorities say happened.

It's still hurricane season. What it's looked like so far.

Comey in court

⚖️ Former FBI director James Comey was in federal court in Virginia this morning to face charges his lawyers say are politically motivated and pushed by President Trump over Comey's congressional testimony relating to 2016 election interference.

College coaches are cashing in

🏈 💰 When he was playing as Prime Time, Deion Sanders was among the highest-paid and highest-profile faces in the NFL. Now that he's coaching at Colorado, "Coach Prime" is still commanding attention — and an eye-popping salary and perks, including a university-paid bodyguard. But where is that money coming from?

Sanders isn't the only college football coach making big bucks.
But others are sitting on the salary sidelines.

Eyes on the skies

💫 If you don't know what 3I/ATLAS is, you're not alone. It seems like nobody on Earth does. But that may change: A spacecraft orbiting around Mars and Jupiter is working its way into position to see what it is as it hurtles toward the sun.

What is it? 🤔 Welllll... Scientists aren't quite sure, but the object was confirmed in July to have originated outside our solar system. It's flying at about 137,000 mph, and expected to pick up speed as it moves closer to the sun.

Six to space: Blue Origin, the space exploration company founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos, is sending six more people into space.
