The Short List

Saturday, April 9

Good morning, friends of The Short List! It's John, and I'm excited this week to bring you some really outstanding must reads from the USA TODAY NETWORK.

🎖️ Service members in need: Suicide in the military is on the rise, especially in the Army. Nowhere is the crisis more evident than Alaska. USA TODAY's Tom Vanden Brook, who has been reporting on the issue for several years, had a pair of stories this week focusing on the unique mental health challenges faced by soldiers in the state.

An Alaskan army base is the epicenter of military suicides. Soldiers know why.
A mother lost her son to suicide. The Army sent her a botched report on his death.

🏠 'I lost everything': Black women are more likely than any other group to be evicted, according to a USA TODAY analysis of four years of local and national housing records. Black women renters get filed against at twice the rate of white women renters nationwide, USA TODAY's Romina Ruiz-Goiriena and Kevin Crowe reported.

⚕️ Resistant to COVID?: One of the lingering mysteries of the COVID-19 pandemic is why some people get infected without getting sick and others don't get infected at all. USA TODAY's Karen Weintraub tackled the question, interviewing researchers who are studying people who are intentionally exposed to the virus but escape its effects.

📺 Save Our Shows: Before you head off into your weekend, make sure to vote in USA TODAY's Save Our Shows poll. It's the 25th anniversary of the exclusive feature, which gives viewers a voice in whether two dozen TV series hovering between renewal and cancellation get another lease on life.
