Trump just undercut Betsy DeVos

President Donald Trump said he would ditch a proposal to slash funding for the Special Olympics, undercutting his secretary of education, Betsy DeVos. At the White House before he headed to a rally, Trump said, "The Special Olympics will be funded, I just told my people." DeVos received widespread criticism after proposing to eliminate $17.6 million in federal funds for the Special Olympics, which provides popular programs to children and adults with disabilities. The elimination would have been a small part of $7 billion in proposed cuts to the department's budget.

This airline was just canceled. Thousands are stranded.

Iceland's low-cost airline WOW Air has officially shut down. The announcement came in a travel alert posted to its website Thursday, which says all flights were canceled. Here's the thing: The sudden cease-all left thousands of passengers completely stranded (and angry). The airline advised passengers to "check available flights with other airlines" if they have not reached their destination. Since the airline didn't guarantee compensation or much other help, here are five tips for travelers affected by the WOW Air shutdown

Where veterans are in 'immediate jeopardy'

New inspection reports paint a discouraging picture of veteran care at many Department of Veterans Affairs nursing homes, including facilities that left veterans in "immediate jeopardy."  A veteran with dementia in Brockton, Massachusetts, sat trapped in his wheelchair for hours, his right foot stuck between the foot rests. Inspectors watched as staff walked by without helping. From April through December 2018, inspectors cited 52 out of 99 VA nursing homes for deficiencies that caused "actual harm" to veterans. In three facilities, they found veterans' health and safety in "immediate jeopardy." The reports come nine months after USA TODAY reported veterans received substandard care at many VA nursing homes.

Head transplants. For animals. So far.

Doctors seem eager to perform the world's first human head transplant. Surgeons from China and Italy claimed two studies published Wednesday add evidence to their ability to treat "irreversible" spinal-cord injuries and bolster controversial aspirations to perform a head transplant.  The doctors said monkeys and dogs were able to walk again after their spinal cords were "fully transected" during surgery, then put back together again. Though the researchers have tested head transplants, with some success (!!!), on small animals, it's a concept that raises profound ethical, psychological and surgical questions.

Poor; punctuation, ruins everything.

College maybe wasn't the only application actress Lori Loughlin's daughter struggled with. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office told Olivia Giannulli (who goes by Olivia Jade online) that her trademark application for "Olivia Jade Beauty" could not be accepted because of poor punctuation.  The punctuation used made it difficult to clarify what her makeup kits would be made of: "Make-up setting spray lipstick lip gloss" should be separated by commas, and the lack of punctuation could be interpreted as conveying a single entity. Loughlin is under federal investigation after being accused of bribing University of Southern California officials to get Olivia and her sister, Isabella Rose Giannulli, into college

The breast news

Newly proposed rules would require mammogram centers to tell women more about how dense breast tissue can affect their health and increase cancer risk. The proposal, announced Wednesday by the Food and Drug Administration, aims to identify breast cancer risks earlier, amending current regulations.
